UST Tiger Cubs guard Andwele Cabañero earned a spot in the Gilas Pilipinas Youth under-16 final roster under head coach LA Tenorio.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced the 12-man Gilas Pilipinas Youth lineup on Friday, May 23 in preparation for the upcoming FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers.

Andwele, a six-foot slasher from Cebu and the younger brother of Nic Cabañero, played a pivotal role in leading the UST Tiger Cubs to the UAAP Season 87 boys’ basketball finals.

However, his absence in the deciding game due to suspension proved costly as UST fell short and settled for a silver finish.

Cabañero earned a spot in the Mythical Five averaging 16.86 points, 9.43 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.79 steals, and 0.14 blocks per game.

Since the UAAP season ended, Cabañero and the Tiger Cubs have gained valuable experience by competing in several pocket tournaments, including the UAAP 3x3 boys' tournament, NBA Rising Stars PH, and the Manila Live-NBTC U16.

Batang Gilas will kick off its SEABA campaign on May 24 against Vietnam at 7:30 p.m. at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga. The team will face Thailand on May 25, Singapore on May 26, Indonesia on May 28, and Malaysia on May 29. The top two teams will battle for the championship on May 30.
