Reigning in España: UST extends UAAP reign with general championship sweep

The University of Santo Tomas continued to assert its dominance in the UAAP as they captured both the seniors and juniors general championships in Season 87.

UST clinched its 48th overall title—and an impressive eighth consecutive crown—after amassing 346 points in the collegiate division. The host school, University of the Philippines, finished a distant second with 269 points.

The Growling Tigers delivered eight gold medals in men’s chess, poomsae, men’s and women’s table tennis, men’s beach volleyball, men’s judo, women’s fencing, and women’s tennis.

They added seven silver medals in women’s basketball, women’s beach volleyball, men’s tennis, women’s kyorugi, women’s athletics, women’s judo, and men’s 3x3 basketball.

The España-based squad also earned nine bronze finishes in men’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s football, baseball, softball, men’s athletics, women’s 3x3 basketball, and men’s kyorugi.

UST’s Teletiger squads made a strong showing in the UAAP’s inaugural Esports tournament. The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and NBA 2K teams each brought home a silver and a bronze across two editions, while the Valorant team claimed a silver.

UST Prime capped off the campaign with a silver finish in the UAAP streetdance competition, on Tuesday, May 20, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Tiger Cubs achieve 9-peat in General Championships

UST’s dominance extended to the juniors division as they bagged their 24th overall and ninth- consecutive title with 313 points, nearly doubling the output of second-place University of the East, which scored 167 points.

UST racked up 11 gold medals in boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ 3x3 basketball, boys’ volleyball, boys’ beach volleyball, juniors table tennis, boys’ and girls’ swimming, boys’ football, and boys’ athletics.

They also took 11 silver medals across juniors basketball, juniors 3x3 basketball, girls’ beach volleyball, boys’ and girls’ chess, girls’ athletics, boys’ and girls’ fencing, and boys’ and girls’ judo.

The lone bronze came from the girls' volleyball squad.

The university now looks ahead as it prepares to host UAAP Season 88 set to open in mid-September.
