The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses ended their UAAP Season 87 Final Four campaign with a four-set loss against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, 22-25, 25-11, 21-25, 21-25 on Saturday, May 3, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
UST failed to book a second consecutive trip to the Finals but still secured a bronze medal following the defeat of the FEU Lady Tamaraws to NU.
Angge Poyos led the charge with 22 points built on 20 attacks and two aces while Reg Jurado added 20 markers in the valiant effort.
Both squads dug deep into their arsenals, exchanging high and off-speed attacks to open the match.
DLSU gained the upper hand midway in the first set, 12-16.
UST leaned on the Lady Spikers’ errors while Arlene Waje’s ace slashed the gap to one, 22-23.
Angel Canino extinguished their run to send La Salle to set point with a crosscourt attack, while an attack error from Poyos gave them the set, 22-25.
Poyos detonated five early points to seize a six-point cushion to start the second frame, 11-5.
UST capitalized on DLSU’s 10 errors and ran riot on attack from all sides to take the set, 25-11.
Poyos and Jurado continued to anchor UST’s offense and keep them alive midway in the third frame, 16-15.
DLSU, however, unleashed a 5-1 run, fueled by Shevana Laput’s attack and two blocks, Amiel Provido’s ace, and Canino’s finisher, to clinch the third set, 21-25.
UST raced to a 4-0 run to open the fourth set, but DLSU erased the deficit to bring them up by one, 4-5.
Cassie Carballo tweaked her ankle around the 9-10 mark but came back into the game with her team trailing by three, 13-16.
With their claws up against the wall, the Tigresses fought off the three-point deficit to level the match courtesy of a Jurado cross, 20-20.
However, the Lady Spikers generated a pivotal 4-1 run before Poyos committed a crucial service error to close the curtains, 21-25.
Canino topped the scorers of the Lady Spikers with 19 points from 17 attacks, a block, and an ace.
