The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers and Golden Tigresses both clinched third place to conclude their UAAP Season 87 volleyball tournament on Wednesday, May 14, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Golden Spikers captain Dux Yambao was crowned as the tournament’s best setter, while Popoy Colinares clinched the best middle blocker alongside Adamson University’s Mark Leo Coguimbal, who was named the second-best middle blocker of the tournament.
JJ Macam was also named rookie of the year in the men’s division, being UST’s fourth ROY awardee and was the second-best outside spiker of the tournament.
Ateneo De Manila’s Ken Batas was named best outside hitter and the most valuable player of the men’s division, dethroning back-to-back MVP Josh Ybañez, who missed the opening four games due to injury.
Meanwhile, National University Lady Bulldog Camilla Lamina crowned UST star setter Cassie Carballo to clinch the best setter award, while De La Salle University’s Lyka De Leon nabbed the best libero award, where Golden Tigresses captain Detdet Pepito held the throne for two consecutive seasons.
Both UST Volleyball teams were also awarded their bronze trophies after finishing third overall in the season.
Finally, Queen Bulldog Bella Belen won her third MVP and UAAP title overall as she was crowned the award for the second season in a row.
The Men’s Finals division was pushed to a game three after the NU Bulldogs pounced back against the FEU Tamaraws, who held a 1-0 advantage in the series.
The League will find out who will be the next UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament champion at a final bout on Saturday, May 17, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the women’s division, on the other hand, saw the NU Lady Bulldogs claim a back-to-back title after defeating the DLSU Lady Spikers in a series sweep.
The UAAP has two more events in the form of the ongoing Esports tournament and the upcoming street dance competition before host University UP hands off the hosting rights to UST in anticipation of the UAAP season 88.
