The UST Golden Tigresses outclassed the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles in straight sets 25-15, 26-24, 26-24 to clinch their seventh win in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball tournament on Saturday, April 5, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Angge Poyos powered UST to their second straight win in the second round with 16 points from 15 attacks and one block, while Marga Altea and Regina Jurado provided additional firepower with 10 points apiece.
“Well, happy kami na na-sustain namin ‘yung ganong situation. So, ‘yung maturity, judgement nung mga player is at least every game nagta-translate kung ano ‘yung gusto nilang mangyari towards the end game,” Golden Tigresses head coach Kungfu Reyes said.
UST was in full command of the entire opening salvo as they continued to balloon their lead to 10 points.
Lyann De Guzman tried to carry ADMU’s scoring load but could not match the Golden Tigresses flurry of offensive barrages.
Beth Hilongo leaped up for a kill that went through the hands of the Blue Eagles' libero to secure the first set for the Golden Tigresses, 25-15.
Both schools exchanged points to start the second frame but it was the Blue Eagles who first arrived at set point off an Ivana Sulit block against Poyos, 22-24.
The Golden Tigresses saved one match point off a service error from Alexa Montoro while two consecutive points from Altea and a cross-court hammer from Poyos turned the set around for UST, 26-24.
The Blue Eagles kept a close distance from the Golden Tigresses in the third frame as both teams committed errors.
Poyos gave UST their first match point with an attack that went through the hands of AC Miner block.
Zey Pacia answered with an off-the-block hit to keep Ateneo’s hopes alive, but Poyos answered back to restore match point for the Golden Tigresses.
Cassie Carballo denied Montoro’s attack at the net to give the Blue Eagles no chance of further extending the match, 26-24.
Miner led Ateneo with 13 points built on 12 attacks and one block, while De Guzman also contributed 12 points all coming from attacks in the losing effort.
The Golden Tigress will attempt to extend their winning streak to three as they go up against the University of the East Lady Warriors on April 12.
