The University of Santo Tomas Junior Growling Tigresses hoisted their second UAAP championship after a comeback win against the National University-Nazareth School Lady Bullpups, 63-57, in the UAAP Season 87 girls’ basketball tournament finals, on Thursday, March 20, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Barby Dajao, a Grade 12 guard from Bacolod City, snatched the trifecta claiming the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Finals MVP, and a Mythical Five nod averaging 17.25 points, 11.25 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 4.13 steals per game.

Rhiana Perez, one of UST’s blue-chipped high school recruits, snared both the Rookie of the Year Award and a place in the Mythical Five averaging 15.5 points, 7.17 rebounds, 4.17 assists, and 4.83 steals in six games played.

Kathrine Insoy also joined the Mythical team after accumulating 12.5 points, 2.63 rebounds, and 3.25 assists per game.

The Junior Growling Tigresses ended the tournament with a dominant 8-0 win-loss record.

The squad racked 102.5 points, 62.63 rebounds, 24.88 assists, and 22.13 steals per game in the sweep.

Dajao led the Tigresses to their second championship notching 22 points and 15 rebounds in the final game.

Perez chalked three markers, 10 rebounds, and six steals. While Insoy chipped in five points, three rebounds, and three steals.

The first girls tournament was inaugurated in 2020, however, the decisive championship game was cancelled against the Adamson Lady Falcons and both squads were declared co-champions.
