Golden Spikers take down Letran Knights to tally third straight V-league win

The UST Golden Spikers tallied their third consecutive win in the V-league Men’s Collegiate Challenge after beating the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights in four sets, 25-23, 25-12, 20-25, 25-18, on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Paco Arena.

Middle blocker Trevor Valera propelled UST to victory with 14 points built on six massive blocks and eight attacks, alongside rookie Al-Bukharie Sali, who also had 14 points from 13 attacks and one service ace, while Paul Colinares contributed 13 points on nine attacks, three service aces, and one block,

Despite leading the first set with as many as four points, 18-14, the Letran Knights tied the match at 23-23, before Colinares shattered Letran’s momentum and sealed the opening set for UST with an attack and a service ace.

After escaping Letran’s late scare in the first, the Golden Spikers showed dominance during the second frame with a 5-0 run, 17-19, which sparked from Letran’s service error, followed by a Gboy De Vega and Jayrack Dela Noche performance to wrap up the set with a commanding 13-point lead, 25-12.

It was a neck-and-neck battle between the two teams on the third salvo, but poor reception during the latter part of the set on the UST side resulted in Jj Macam’s attack error and Dux Yambao’s net fault that gave Letran the upper hand running away with the third, 20-25.

Following a setback during the third set, the Golden Spikers ended the match with regained confidence in the fourth frame as Macam killed an overpass from the Letran Knights, 25-18.

CSJL’s middle blocker, Vince Himzon carried the scoring load for the Knights With 16 big points from 15 attacks and one block.

The Golden Spikers, 3-2, will return to the same arena on Monday, Sept. 2 at 12 p.m. to face the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.
