The UST Golden Tigresses cemented their Final Four credentials with a twice-to-beat advantage after dispatching the DLSU Lady Spikers, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15, in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on April 27 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Super rookie Angge Poyos led UST in their four-set win with 22 points built on 18 attacks, three blocks, and one ace alongside team captain and libero Detdet Pepito, who had 17 digs and six receptions.
After losing the initial set, UST was again on the verge of losing the second frame after DLSU’s setter Julia Coronel had an ace that brought the game to 23-all.
Jonna Perdido, who tallied 19 points, salvaged the Golden Tigresses with an attack to pull to set point, before Poyos connected on an off-the-block hit against the La Salle towers to take one set apiece, 25-23.
The Golden Tigresses had a renewed aggression in the third frame, jumping on a 5-0 run.
Regina Jurado, who was quiet in the previous sets, exploded with 13 points, including a block in the third set that sparked the Tigresses' rally to take a 2-1 edge, 25-16.
The fourth frame was no different as the Tigresses ignited an 18-6 finishing run to snatch the win.
After her crucial service error during the fifth set in their first-round encounter with DLSU, service specialist Xyza Gula redeemed herself in the game, serving two aces to end the fourth set and to win the match, 25-15.
Founded on her stellar performance in the initial set, DLSU's Shevana Laput scored 26, off 23 attacks, two aces, and one block, while the returning Angel Canino had 13 points all on attacks.
The two squads will face again in the Final Four on May 5, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
