The UST Golden Spikers improved their final four chances after tripping the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, in the UAAP Season 86 men's volleyball tournament on Wednesday, April 3, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The win put the Golden Spikers on a 6-4 win-loss slate, which is currently within the top four threshold.
Josh Ybañez steered UST once more as he posted 25 points, including the final two points in the fourth set en route to the win.
Gboy De Vega backed him up with 18 points off 15 attacks, while Jay Rack De La Noche and Rainier Flor contributed double digit figures with 14 and 10 markers, respectively.
After a 6-6 deadlock early in the opener, UST broke away with a 5-1 burst, with De La Noche and Popoy Colinares unleashing combination plays to seal the first set win, 25-17.
Adamson chopped a once seven-point lead to three in the second set, but UST kept its poise, steadily preserving the separation on the way to a 2-0 start.
It was then a nip-and-tuck third set for both squads until the Falcons escaped through two straight kills courtesy of Francis Casas and Mark Coguimbal, 23-25.
Adamson led for most of the fourth set, before the Golden Spikers finished the canto with a 12-7 run to ultimately withstand the Falcons.
Marc Paulino led Adamson with 16 points, while Casas added 13 as the Falcons fell to 4-5 and a sixth place in the standings.
Next for the Golden Spikers are the UP Fighting Maroons on April 10 at the same venue.
