The UST Male and Lady Tennisters displayed contrasting results in the elimination round of the UAAP Season 86 tennis tournament on Sunday, March 17, at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
The UST Male Tennisters delivered a dominant 4-1 triumph versus the DLSU Green Tennisters to secure the top spot.
UST finished the first two rounds with a 10-2 win-loss record.
The first singles matchup saw Ericjay Tangub overpower Green Tennister Enzo Enriquez, 6-0, 6-1.
DLSU’s EJ Geluz and Byrst Libao tied the scoreboard for La Salle at the cost of Geo Serino and Steven Sonsona who lost 2-6, 2-6.
Rookie-MVP Nilo Ledama however, got the lead back for UST after completing a couple of bagels (a set won 6-0) against Ohye Tortal, 6-0, 6-0,
Españas’ duo of Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines gave the Male Tennisters a firm grip of the win following a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Leyton Portin and RJ Virrey.
UST's Sebastian Santos capped off the final matchup with a comfortable victory over DLSU’s Nonoy Po, 6-1, 6-3.
The Male Tennisters are set to face the UE Red Warriors in their Final Four Matchup at the same venue but with the date yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, the UST Lady Tennisters lost their third straight match after bowing down to the UP Fighting Maroons 2-3 in their respective matches on the same date and venue.
Lady Tennister Alex Santos started the showdown with a straight-set victory over UP’s Renee Esteban, dominating the match 6-1, 6-0.
UP tied things up with Joshea Malazarte and Jesha Cervantes overcoming UST’s Debbie Gom-os and Miles Vitaliano 6-1, 7-5.
The Fighting Maroons took control of the match with a 2-1 advantage after Jufe Cucoy endured a tough second set over Lady Tennister Nicholas de la Rita, 6-4, 7-6.
UST however forced a deciding match after Justine Maneja and Minette Bentillo routed Anica Cari and Jonamil Prado in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
UP ultimately reigned supreme in the decider after Rachel Valdez managed to hand UST’s Kaye Emana her first loss of the season in a thrilling three setter, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
The loss meant that UST is now tied with UP with identical 5-3 records.
Both teams will play a deciding match for a spot in the Final Four on Saturday, March 23 at the same venue.
