The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Fencers made a podium finish in all six events on the third day of the UAAP Season 87 fencing tournament on Thursday, April 24, at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Leading the medal haul was the boys’ epee team composed of Nathaniel Bernal, Reynaldo De Guzman, John Agasti Malinao, and Ian Heinz Miranda, who clinched the gold medal with a commanding 45-37 win over the University of the East fencing team.
Malinao, who won the bronze medal in the individual boys’ epee category, told TomasinoWeb that he did expect to win a medal despite being a freshman.
“I expected to win a medal whether or not if it was an individual [event] or team event because of the past results of my previous competitions,” said Malinao.
“I’m really happy that I got bronze on the first day, But I felt that I could do more. So bumawi ako sa third day which was the team event. I’m thankful that coach Armand and my teammates trusted me to guide them to victory,” he added.
Women’s foil gold medalist Ysah Catantan, Patricia Mae Daradar, Ruby Kate Sardenia, and Krystal Tuy settled for a silver medal after narrowly losing to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in a nail-biting 42-41 finish.
Tiger fencers Eunice Villanueva, Larco Cortez, Lyon Fernandez, and Ricardo Fuenzalida picked up another silver medal as they fell short of a three-peat championship to UE’s Charles Babatio, Christian Concepcion, Shawn Felipe, and Louis Shoemaker in the men’s sabre team event finals, 37-45.
Boys’ foil individual bronze medalist Angelo Aberilla, along with Alberto Arce, Antonio Baydid, and Eilrahc Sendico, yielded to Ateneo High School in the semifinals of the boys’ sabre team event, 41-45, to bag a bronze medal.
UST’s Lady Bathan, Marian Castro, Anne David, and Aila Sison copped another bronze medal after losing to De La Salle Zobel, 45-31, in the semifinal round of the girls’ foil team event.
Men’s Epee bronze medalist Kieth Bernal, Adam Putian, Adam Sandler Maaño, and Christian Sarmiento settled for another bronze as they were ousted by the UE Red Warriors, 34-45, in the semifinals of the men’s epee team event.
The Tiger Fencers will look to add to their 18 medals as they partake in the final day of competition on Friday, April 25, in the same venue.
