The UST Golden Tigresses displayed another lopsided affair, trouncing the Letran Lady Knights, 25-21, 25-23, 25-14, for their second win of Pool C in the Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Championship at the FilOil EcoOIl Centre on Monday, September 18.

Rookie Angeline Poyos led the way once more for the Tigresses with 13 points on 11 attacks, while Xyza Gula backed her up with nine markers as UST now stands atop of its pool with a 2-0 slate.

The Tigresses recovered from a rough start, turning back an early 2-6 disadvantage courtesy of an 8-0 run predicated on their down-the-line attacks to snatch the first set.

UST dominated the attack department throughout the match with 44 kills compared to Letran’s 32. However, that potency in their hits got diluted with their errors, committing six more than the Lady Knights.

The Lady Knights kept it close in the second set before the Tigresses leaned on Gula’s two straight kills in the final stretch to keep Letran at bay heading to set three.

Poyos then took control for the Golden Tigresses, pouring seven points in the third set to ultimately put away the Lady Knights.

Sophomore Regina Jurado and setter Cassie Carballo also had seven markers each for the Tigresses, while rookie Kyla Cordora continued to impress with seven points on six attacks.

Juidel Nitura lifted the Lady Knights with 12 points but offensive help came few and far between, having only two players scoring more than five points.

The game also served as Oliver Almadro’s head coaching debut for Letran, after leaving the Ateneo Blue Eagles two months ago. Almadro led the Eagles to the UAAP Season 81 title in his first year as the head tactician in 2019.

UST will face the reigning two-time NCAA champion College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers on Monday, September 25, in the same venue.
