The dream of a historic three-peat came to a crashing halt for the University of Santo Tomas Male Tennisters as the NU Bulldogs completed a devastating 3-0 sweep in game 2 of the UAAP Season 87 men's tennis finals on Saturday, April 12, at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center.
Nilo Ledama, who was hailed as the season's MVP for the third straight year, succumbed to EJ Tugade in the first singles, 4-6, 4-6, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0.
"Masyado [siyang] nag-ingat sa palo, sabi niya napre-pressure daw sya... [Ang] sabi ko [naman], 'di niya mabitaw 'yung palo niya eh, kapag iniingatan, mas lalong nage-error," UST head coach Johnny Arcilla told TomasinoWeb.
"Eh ‘yung kalaban [Tugade] niya sobrang aggressive talaga, sobrang perfect ng laro. Yan 'yung sobrang uhaw talaga manalo," he added.
NU’s Andrei Padao then cruised past Chistopher Sonsona, 6-3, 6-0, to further extend the Jhocson-based squad’s lead, 2-0.
UST’s Sebastian Santos attempted to spark a reverse sweep but fell to Bulldog Aljon Talatayod, 7(7)- 6(3), 6-2, ultimately giving NU the championship.
The bout between the pair of Nash Agustines and Richard Bautista against NU’s Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla was cut off short, 3-6, 6-5, as Talatayod already completed the sweep.
"Lumamang tayo, sana kung nakuha natin yon, baka naging [game-changer] pa yon," said Arcilla. "Di ko naman sila sinisi, ginawa naman talaga nila lahat-lahat. Napakasobrang ganda lang talaga ng nilaro ng NU."
The last time the Bulldogs won the championship was in the 81st edition of the tournament.
