The University of Santo Tomas Tennisters ended both of their respective matchups with a win in the UAAP Season 87 tennis tournament on Sunday, March 23, at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Pasay.
The Female tennisters outlasted the De La Salle University Female Tennisters, 3-2 to cap off their elimination round with a 7-1 record.
Kaye Emana paced UST’s momentum as she dominated Bea Gomez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Mica Emana played a perfect match to extend UST’s lead at the cost of Jam Madis, 6-0, 6-0, for the second singles match.
Patricia Lim gunned for the finishing blow but fell to DLSU’s Maikee Vicencio in the third singles match, 3-6, 6(3)-7(7).
The pair of Kryshana Brazal and Princess Dela Rita were also bested by the duo of Arianne Nillasca and Amor Idjao in a thrilling three-set match 6-1, 3-6, 9-11.
Judy Padilla and Debbie Gom-os secured the Female Tennisters win after drubbing Arthea and Althea Lu in the second doubles match, 6-1, 6-0, to stay ahead of the pack heading into the championship round.
Meanwhile, the Male Tennisters exacted revenge upon the National University Bulldogs, 4-1, to lead the men’s division with a 9-1 record.
Ericjay Tangcub succumbed to NU’s Andrei Padao, 3-6, 6-2, 1-6, in the first singles match but Sebastian Santos drubbed Jules Lazaro for the second singles match, 6-2, 6-3, to tie things up.
Season 86 MVP Nilo Ledasma kept the wins rolling for UST as he provided a strong performance over EJ Tugade, 6-0, 6-2, in the third singles match.
Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines pushed through the combined forces of Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla, 6-4, 7(7)-6(40, for a 3-1 lead.
Thomasian duo Steven Sonsona and Symon Jaculan then secured a victory over NU’s Aljon Talatayod and Gab Bandoquillo, 7(7)-6(3), 6-3, to secure their twice-to-beat advantage.
The Male Tennisters are set to square off against the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday, March 29, in the same venue.
