The UST Golden Tigresses missed out on a reverse sweep against the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 24-26, to suffer their third loss in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, March 23, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
Reg Jurado led the Tigresses in scoring with 20 points built on 18 attacks and two blocks, while Beth Hilongo scored a season high of 17 points.
Angge Poyos also knocked in 14 points all coming from attacks and 19 excellent digs in the losing effort.
The Lady Tamaraws charged right out of the gate as Jazlyn Ellarina scored four points to give them a three-point lead 5-8.
A late effort from the Tigresses led by Hilongo and Poyos brought the lead down to one, 22-23 but kills from Clarisse Loresco and Gerzel Petallo gave FEU the set, 22-25.
Both teams justled for the lead early in the second set but four big finishes from Jurado enabled UST to swing the momentum in their favor by the second technical timeout, 16-14.
The Lady Tamaraws remained resilient and caught up through a 4-1 run sparked by back-to-back blocks from Faida Bakanke and Lovely Lopez, 23-22.
An attack from Bakanke tied the set at 24-apiece while three consecutive kills from Lopez helped FEU steal the set from UST, 24-26.
FEU drew first blood to start the third salvo, 2-0, but attacks from Jurado and Poyos fueled a 7-0 run for the Golden Tigresses to take a 17-9 lead.
UST continued to hammer down on the Lady Tamaraws as Jurado, Poyos, Banagua, and Hilongo helped UST take the third set, 25-16.
A joust for the lead was interrupted when a 5-1 run from UST triggered by an attack from Hilongo helped the Tigresses gain a six-point lead, 16-10.
FEU rammed through the Golden Tigresses six-point advantage through the barrages of Bakanke and Petallo to tie the set at the 23-all mark.
An attack error from Bakanke provided UST set point, 23-24, but a tip-over from Chen Tagaod brought the Lady Tamaraws a much needed deadlock, 24-24.
A service ace from Mitzi Panangin and a block from Jean Asis ultimately proved to be the dagger to UST’s heart, 24-26.
Bakanke led the Tamaraws with 22 points on 18 attacks, two blocks, and two service aces while Petallo and Ellarina nabbed 12 points each.
The Tigresses are currently on a two-game losing streak and stand with a 5-3 record.
They will look to snap this streak as they clash with the Adamson Lady Falcons on Saturday, March 29, at the Araneta Coliseum.
