The UST Golden Tigresses survived the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a five-set bout, 25-15, 27-25, 23-25, 26-28, 15-13, to open the second round of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 20, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Tigresses remained undefeated after two consecutive five-setters in the same venue.

Rookie sensation Angge Poyos led in dismantling the Lady Eagles with 22 points, while Jonna Perdido displayed 17 points.

Star setter Cassie Carballo orchestrated UST's offense, tallying 26 excellent sets along with four service aces.

UST established a seven-point lead off a 5-0 run to take control of the opening set, 10-3.

The Tigresses eventually opened up a 10-point lead, the biggest gap in the game, to finish the first set, 25-15.

Turning tides, the Lady Eagles took control of the second set before the Tigresses established a comeback finish, bringing the set into extension to pull through, 27-25.

UST seemed to be in firm control until the Blue Eagles leaned on their timely kills to snatch the third set, 23-25.

Adding to their woes, the Tigresses dropped the fourth set after a crucial service error from Carballo gave Ateneo in the extended play, 26-28.

Redeeming herself from the previous set, Carballo then pulled off crucial aces to pull the Tigresses to a fifth-set win, 15-13.

Lyann De Guzman helped the Blue Eagles with 22 points, while Sophia Buena contributed 21 points from 19 attacks and two blocks in their sixth loss of the season.

The Tigresses are slated to face the third-seed NU Bulldogs on Sunday, March 24, at the same venue.

Miguel Sumalinog is the President of TomasinoWeb. Mostly known as “Suma” among his friends and peers, he was exposed to campus media and photography way before he was a Thomasian and owes major credit to those initial experiences. He portrays his commitment through his various outputs in photography especially in covering UAAP content for the publication. As leads in TomasinoWeb’s Photography department, he has exposure to the non-stop action that the UAAP and other leagues offer. Outside of the sports beat, Suma also covers various campus events and national happenings as work doesn’t stop with his beat alone and venturing out of it provides experience that cannot be taught within the four corners of a classroom. When he’s not fanboying over Eya Laure and Cassie Carballo during volleyball coverages, Suma spends most of his time in front of his computer playing VALORANT and other various competitive games. He also passes time on the court by playing badminton.
