The UST Golden Tigresses conquered the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 28-26, to complete a first-round sweep of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 16 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Jonna Perdido fired 16 points off 14 attacks and two blocks, while Regina Jurado contributed 12 points for the Tigresses. Playmaker Cassie Carballo had 22 excellent sets along with five points, including two blocks.
The Tigresses were tamed in the second frame as they struggled to score against Adamson's net defenses, 22-25.
It was a lopsided third set for UST as they displayed prowess in the attacking department throughout to build an early lead and never look back, 25-15.
The fourth set saw Adamson’s Lucille Almonte connect on back-to-back attacks to extend the set. Star setter Carballo ultimately turned to Angeline Poyos for the finishing touches, 28-26.
Poyos sealed the game with three straight attack points to add to her game-high tally of 16 points.
The España-based squad came straight from preliminary examination week and admittedly struggled to handle catching up with academics while trying to maintain a good standing in the league.
“Ang worry nga namin baka hindi makapagperform yung mga bata kasi nga left and right yung puyat, yun ang isang worry namin doon sa magiging performance nila,” Coach Kungfu Reyes said.
Rochelle Lalongisip led the Adamson squad with 14 points alongside Antonette Adolfo and Almonte who had 12 points apiece.
UST holds the solo lead after the first round with a perfect 7-0 record. The Golden Tigresses last completed a first-round sweep in Season 69.
The schedule for the tournament's second round is yet to be announced.
