Poyos delivers 24 to lead Golden Tigresses past Lady Red Warriors

The UST Golden Tigresses remained undefeated in their UAAP Season 86 campaign after beating the UE Lady Red Warriors in four sets, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Araneta Coliseum.

UST rookie Angeline Poyos led the way with 24 points. Regina Jurado also scored 16 points, while Xyza Gula contributed 10 points.

Cassie Carballo continued her brilliance with 19 excellent sets for UST’s second win.

The Lady Red Warriors got off to a quick start, securing a 10-4 lead early in the first set.

The Tigresses managed to cut the lead to one, but UE kept their cool to secure the first set after a set attack from rookie Kizzie Madriaga.

UST regained their composure and showcased their offensive prowess, with Poyos, Jurado, and Jonna Perdido getting in on the action.

A kill from Poyos saw the Tigresses even things out in one set piece.

UE started off the third set strong, holding a four-point cushion en route to the set's first technical timeout. A service ace from Angeline Poyos tied the match at the 11-all mark.

Poyos continued her offensive run throughout the third frame, following up with an ace to bring set point. A block from rookie Mary Banagua ended the set, placing UST in the driver’s seat.

The Lady Red Warriors kept the fourth set tight, even managing to lead by three in the early stages of the set.

UST eventually took control of the set, and managed to hold off UE through a kill from Angeline Poyos.

Rookie Casiey Dongallo delivered 23 points for the Lady Red Warriors, while KC Cepada and Riza Nogales dropped 10 points each. UE led the match in blocks and digs, outscoring UST seven to six, and 56 to 41, respectively.

The Golden Tigresses will face the defending champions DLSU Lady Spikers, on Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Mall of Asia Arena.—With reports from Johann Coronel
