The UST Golden Spikers suffered their first defeat of the UAAP Season 86 volleyball tournament at the hands of the De La Salle Green Spikers 24-26, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Jerico Adajar led the Green Spikers with 24 excellent sets, while Noel Kampton paced the DLSU attack with 18 points. John Ronquillo and Vince Maglinao also added 16 points apiece.
UST managed to pull through the second set, 25-23, riding out a Gboy De Vega right knee sprain and putting the match at a deadlock, 1-1.
After a tightly-knit first set, the Golden Spikers squeezed through a two-point advantage, 24-22.
However, DLSU catapulted a 4-0 spree out of UST’s errors to snatch the first set. 24-26.
The Golden Spikers committed 15 of their 40 errors in the first set alone, the most by any team this season.
La Salle led the entire third set with Kampton, Ronquillo and Maglinao leading the Green Spikers offense.
An attack error from UST's Josh Ybañez gave La Salle two sets to one advantage.
The Green Spikers carried their hot form into the fourth set, with Maglinao scoring seven points in the set while Kampton dropped six to leave UST behind in the fourth.
An attack error from Sherwin Umandal ultimately gave La Salle the win.
Josh Ybañez led the scoring department for UST with 20 points, while Jay Rack De La Noche and De Vega contributed with nine and eight points, respectively in the losing effort.
UST’s De Vega also left the court in the third set after an apparent bad fall.
The Golden Spikers are set to take on the FEU Tamaraws on Sunday, March 3, at the same venue.—With reports from Johann Coronel
