Both the UST Tiger and Lady shuttlers failed to punch their slot to the finals phase in the UAAP Season 86 Badminton tournament knockout semi-finals on Friday, Nov.10, at the Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Quezon City.
Both UST’s representatives for the tournament will have the chance for bronze medals after faltering to Ateneo Blue Eagles.
UST’s Lennox Culiao failed to bring his matchup with Ateneo’s Pingkoy Salvado to three sets after a 21-14 finisher in the first singles match, 21-15, 21-14.
Sean de la Cruz faltered in a three-set face-off against the Blue Eagle’s Lyrden Laborte, 21-8, 21-9.
Tiger Shuttlers’ duo of Janzen Panisales and Cuilao falters in a sweep against Ateneo’s Pingkoy Salvado and Lance Vargas, 21-15, 21-19, guaranteeing a spot in the finals stage for Ateneo and sweeping UST, 3-0.
The Lady Shuttlers’ fate ended in the same vein as the defending champions, Ateneo, blew them out.
Ateneo’s Mika De Guzman dominated in the first women’s matchup against UST’s Lizzy Belen in two sets, 21-10, 21-10, while the second matchup featured Patricia de Leon with the same fate, losing in a sweep by Blue Eagles’ Jochelle Alvarez, 21-11, 21-8.
The lone double-matchup was secured by Ateneos’ duo of De Guzman and Alvarez against UST’s Maye Alvarez and Patricia De Leon in another sweep, 21-13, 21-17.
After a dominant outing in the semi-finals, Ateneo keeps their four-peat dream this season.
The Tiger Shuttlers will match up with the UP Fighting Maroons, while the Lady Shuttlers will be up against the NU Lady Bulldogs as they attempt to claim bronze medals on Sunday, Nov. 12, at the same venue.
