The UST Lady Shuttlers clinched their second win of the season against the DLSU Lady Shuttlers, 4-1, to complete the semifinal cast for the UAAP Season 87 women's badminton tournament on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Badminton Hall.
The first singles match saw a slow start from UST’s Patricia De Leon as she surrendered the first game against Erica Bautista, 15-21, however, she quickly regained composure to tie the match, 21-18 (1-1).
Bautista caught fire to hold an early four-point lead, 8-4, however De Leon slowly built momentum via consecutive drop shots to escape with the win, 21-16, to give UST a 1-0 lead.
Reshane Nicor continued the España-based squad’s rally as she gave UST a 2-0 lead despite losing the first game to Zasha Tuario from the Taft-based squad, 19-21, 24-22, 21-13.
De Leon then paired up with Kynah Alvarez as they breezed through the DLSU pair of Mia Maguilimotan and Meryl Antonio for the first doubles match, 21-17, 21-17.
UST’s Helyn Saladaga and Anne Santos repeated what the De Leon-Alvarez pair did with a sweep against DLSU’s Bautista and Marie Pantoja, 21-9, 21-11, to go up 4-0.
The España-based squad faced their only setback against the DLSU as Antonio edged out Katrina Vitangcol in straight sets, 10-21, 19-21, to finish the contest 4-1.
Although falling short off a 5-0 sweep, the Lady Shuttlers will go up against the top-seeded UP Fighting Maroons in their semifinal matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the same venue to gun for a final slot.
