The UST Golden Tigresses booked a ticket to the semifinals after vanquishing the College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers in four sets, 25-15. 25-16, 19-25, 32-30, in the Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Championship quarterfinals held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 4.

After an upset win by the Lady Blazers during their last encounter, the Tigresses exacted revenge and bested the Taft-based squad to eliminate them from further contention.

UST’s setter Cassie Carballo was named the MVP of the match after notching 35 excellent sets throughout the game. Veteran hitters Regina Jurado and Jonna Perdido ignited the offense for the Tigresses, recording 17 and 16 points respectively, while ace rookie Angeline Poyos chipped in 15 markers in the victory.

Leading the other front for the Lady Blazers were opposite hitters Gayle Pascual and Rhea Mae Densing, dropping 16 and 15 points respectively to carry the offensive load.

The Tigresses crept its way into match point, 24-21, before a CSB mini-run and a series of deadlocks kept things even. UST’s middle blocker Bianca Plaza sealed the ticket for the Tigresses after two successful hits, 32-30.

The first two sets showed the Tigresses’ dominance in the attack department with a combined 34 attacks, dominating the Lady Blazers’ 15 combined attacks to provide a comfortable two-set UST lead.

Errors struck the Tigresses throughout the third frame, yielding eight errors to CSB’s four. The Lady Blazers responded by equaling UST’s 15 attacks before routing the Tigresses on a 12-6 spree to force a fourth set, 25-19.

The Golden Tigresses are set to face the FEU Lady Tamaraws in a best-of-three semifinals showdown at the same venue tomorrow Sunday, Nov. 5.
