The UST Tiger Shuttlers dominated against Adamson, sweeping the Falcons 5-0 for their first victory in the UAAP Season 86 Men’s Badminton Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Quezon City.
Adamson's Nathan Acedillo took a beating from UST’s Lennox Cuilao, winning both sets by double digits, 21-11, 21-9.
Meanwhile, Tiger Shuttler’s Sean Dela Cruz handed a heartbreaker to the Falcons’ Harold Bonilla as Dela Cruz won through a squeaker in the first set, 21-18, and executed a 16-4 run after a 5-5 deadlock claiming the second set, 21-9.
After Adamson mounted a comeback to claim the starting set, 18-21, UST’s Kyle Basilio and Munir Bartolome defeated Adamson’s Noel Hernandez and Gabriel Ganoy in two-straight sets 21-18, 21-11.
The second doubles match for UST highlighted a two-set victory for Lennox Cuilao and Janzen Panisales against Adamson's Kyles Corcuera and David Libanan. After an extended contest in the first set at 23-23, the Tigers scored two straight to claim the set, 25-23, before continuing their momentum, giving UST their fourth win, 21-17.
The third single’s match was ruled over by UST's Ivan Tuazon in two sets, 21-7, 21-9, with a stellar 7-1 start in the first set and a 17-6 explosion to open the second set.
The Lady Shuttlers, on the other hand, remained winless in this year’s iteration of the women's tournament as they claimed only two of their five matches against UAAP S85 champions, Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Their first win came from a two-setter when UST's Patricia de Leon outlasted Ateneo's Angel Valle through an extended second set, 21-18, 22-20.
UST's Lizzy Belen was swept by Mika de Guzman of Ateneo as the first set featured a dominant de Guzman, 3-21, before Belen’s gallant fight in the next frame was put to waste, 17-21.
Lady Shuttlers’ Rhafi Santos and Jen Saladaga then falter in two sets, 17-21, 18-21, after leading halfway through the penultimate set, 11-8.
UST’s Patricia de Leon and Marielle Alvarez tied the tally up as they claimed the second double’s match in straight sets, 21-16, 21-17, rallying from an 8-1 run to claim the first set.
The last match of the day featured Ateneo’s Jochelle Alvarez beating the Lady Shuttlers’ Clara Ignacio in two sets, 13-21, 7-21, trouncing Ignacio in the final set by 14 points.
The Tiger Shuttlers will be up against National University on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the same time and venue.
