The UST Tiger Shutters suffered identical defeats against the UP Fighting Maroons during the opening day of the UAAP Season 86 badminton tournaments on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Centro Atletico Badminton Center in Quezon City.

UP handed the men’s Tiger Shuttlers a 1-4 beating as Sean de la Cruz pulled out the only win of UST, trouncing Raydric Abinales in three sets, 19-21, 21-8, 21-18.

Following the win, UST’s Lennox Cuilao then fell to UP’s Jewel Albo, 20-22, 9-21, before Tiger Shuttler Jan Alfonso Dizon crumbled against UP’s Kervin Llanes in lopsided fashion, 5-21, 13-21.

The Maroons continued their dominance in the doubles matches as Raydric Abinales and Michael Clemente swept Tiger Shuttlers Munir Bartolome and Kyle Basilio, 13-21, 18-21.

UST’s duo Janzen Panisales and Cuilao also fell short of their valiant effort against Jason Vanzuela and Albo in the second doubles game, 10-21, 21-19, 21-15.

Meanwhile, the Lady Shuttlers suffered a similar fate, after losing to the UP Lady Maroons, 1-4, in the afternoon games.

UP’s Susmita Ramos thwarted UST’s team captain Clara Ignacio, 12-21, 9-21, in the first singles match, while Thea Gonzales took down Patricia De Leon, 23-21, 12-21, 13-21.

To continue their dominance, Ramos and Gonzales blasted Tiger Shuttlers’ Ignacio and De Leon in the doubles match, 17-21, 17-21.

Lizzy Belen of UST suffered another defeat against Aldreen Concepcion of UP, 10-21, 13-21.

The Lady Shuttlers' lone victory came from Rhafi Santos and Jen Saludaga, crushing UP’s tandem Andrea Abalos and Kimberly Lao to wrap up the afternoon slate, 18-21, 21-14, 21-18.

The Tiger Shuttlers will return to action on Sunday against the Adamson University at the same venue.
