The UST Golden Tigresses kicked off its Shakey's Super League Pre-Season campaign on a high note, nipping the Perpetual Help Lady Altas, 25-12, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, at FilOil EcoOil Centre on Saturday, September 16.
Rookie Angeline Poyos dropped 20 points off 16 attacks, while fellow freshman Kyla Cordora posted 13 points to lead the Tigresses to an opening-day win.
Capitalizing on the Lady Altas' flimsy floor defense, the Tigresses were dominant early on, scoring the first six points of the match, before building a double-digit lead in the opening set to draw first blood.
But the Lady Altas found momentum in the second frame with the help of UST's errors.
The Golden Tigresses had 22 errors – 17 higher than Perpetual’s — throughout the game, but none more costly than the España-based squad's net touch violation in the dying stages of the second period ending their late surge and ultimately knotted the set score.
The Tigresses strung together two separate 5-0 runs to pull away in the third set courtesy of their dominant tally in the attacking department. The Tigresses finished the game with 64 attacks versus the Lady Altas' 37.
Perpetual tried to keep it close for most of the fourth set, until the Tigresses stepped on the gas and turned to Poyos to carry the cudgels and lift UST to an opening win.
Regina Jurado also contributed 11 markers for UST, while Jonna Perdidi added 10, including the finishing hit that sealed the win in the fourth frame.
Rose Dapol paced the Lady Altas with 11 points as Perpetual fell to a 0-1 hole in the Pool C of the single-round robin tournament.
The Tigresses will face the Letran Lady Knights next on Monday, September 18, at 11 a.m., at the same venue.
