The annual procession of the Jesus Nazareno on Jan. 9 became the longest in Philippine history, lasting nearly 31 hours and surpassing the previous duration record set nearly a decade ago.
An estimated 9.6 million devotees took part in this year’s Traslación, exceeding last year’s record attendance of 8.1 million.
Despite the massive crowd, officials clarified during a press conference that the prolonged procession was primarily due to devotees pushing the andas, or carriage, toward the front, causing delays. This was further compounded by mechanical issues, including broken wheels and snapped ropes.
Mechanical failures, including two snapped ropes at around 3:22 p.m., stalled the andas for nearly four hours near Arlegui Street.
Following the dungaw at 4:12 a.m., Quiapo Church Rector Rev. Fr. Jade Licuanan announced that the image would temporarily remain at San Sebastian Basilica. Despite the announcement, devotees continued the Traslación toward Quiapo Church.
The image of Jesus Nazareno returned to Quiapo Church at 10:50 a.m. on Jan. 10, ending the procession after more than 30 hours.
