The University of Santo Tomas Teletigers Esports Club Valorant team shook off an opening day loss to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 1-2, on Wednesday, May 7, at the Quantum Skyview in Gateway Mall 2.
The España-based squad bounced back the following day, Thursday, May 8, with a thrilling reverse sweep over the Adamson University Falcons to earn their first win in the UAAP Season 87 Valorant tournament.
UP set the tone early with a 13-8 victory on the Haven map, capitalizing on key site holds to shut down UST’s late-game pushes.
TGR roared back with a statement of their own, dismantling the FIghting Maroons in dominant fashion with a lopsided 13-2 win on the Lotus map.
The Diliman-based squad then prevented a late collapse in the third game on the Icebox map, as they closed the door on the Teletigers with a post-plant win, 13-9.
Day 2 comeback
UST lost the opening game against the Falcons, 10-13, but pounced back in the second map, with Michael Gumaro leading the charge to set a commanding 9-2 lead.
The España-based squad continued moving forward to force a decider, 13-6.
Gumaro followed up their streak with an imposing ace in round 6 to put UST up, 6-0.
TGR maintained control for the remainder of the match, cruising past the San Marcelino-based squad, 13-3, to grab their first win of the tournament.
TGR will aim to carry their momentum as they go up against the unbeaten Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Saturday, May 10, at the same venue.
