The University of Santo Tomas Golden Sox succumbed to a late rally by the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 5-10, in the second round of the UAAP Season 87 baseball tournament on Wednesday, April 9, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The España-based squad will try to keep their final four hopes alive against the De La Salle University Green Batters on Sunday, April 13, in the same venue.

UST opened the game with a run courtesy of a double from Marquez, 1-0. The San Marcelino-based squad responded with two runs of their own at the bottom of the first, 1-2.

Adamson recorded another run at the bottom of the second inning before the Golden Sox scored a run at the top of the third inning with an RBI from Mhigeil Cerda, 2-3.

The España-based squad then reclaimed the lead at the top of the fourth inning courtesy of another double from Sean De Leon, 4-3.

The Golden Sox scored another run at the top of the fifth inning, but the San Marcelino-based squad responded with a run of their own to keep the game close, 5-4.

The España-based squad attempted to extend their lead at the top of the sixth inning, however, Adamson reliever Milko Go Jr. kept UST scoreles. AdU responded with a hit from Kier Plaza, allowing the Soaring Falcons to put a runner on second base.

Golden Sox starting pitcher Harry Geronimo then committed two consecutive base-on-balls against Mark Montoya and JM Tupig that loaded all the bases.

A hit from James Nisnisan, followed by two fielding errors from UST shortstop Justine Rosales allowed Plaza, Montoya, and Tupig to score and give Adamson their first lead of the ball game, 5-7.

Both teams went scoreless in the next inning until three runs from the Soaring Falcons in the eighth inning put the game out of reach for the Golden Sox, 5-10.

UST reliever Jesus Cabigao attempted to lead-off the España-based squad’s offense at the top of the ninth inning, however, Go was able to force Cabigao into a fly out.

Vargas tallied a hit to the outfield, but Go fended off the UST attempt, retiring Cedrick Marquez and Raniel Cardio, to seal the win in favor of the San Marcelino-based squad.

The Golden Sox dropped to a 3-5 win-loss record, ending their two-game winning streak that started on their win against the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles last April 2, followed by a hard-fought comeback against the league-leading National University Bulldogs on April 6.
