Flower vendors of Dangwa, Manila’s flower shop haven, priced flowers at a steady rate after excess supply was seen, approaching the Undas season.
Seasoned flower vendor Jay Mar Caravana told TomasinoWeb that the excess supply was due to the better-than-expected harvest from Baguio.
According to Caravana, the price increase stopped swelling on Oct. 31, a day before the Undas rush hit.
The iconic Malaysian Mums most commonly used for cemetery arrangements remained at P150 per dozen, while Orchids, originally priced at P500 per dozen, rose to around P650 to P700 per dozen.
Anthuriums were also hit with the price increase brought on by the Undas season, with Anthurium Whites going from P400 to P700 per dozen. Local Anthuriums, on the other hand, went from P400 per 5 dozen to as much as P650 to P700 per 5 dozen.
Non-flowers, such as leaves, are priced at P15 per bundle, while floral foams can be bought at P700 per box of 20 pieces.
Prices of popular flowers sold during Valentine's season did not increase since those used for cemeteries differ from those in a romantic bouquet.
Valentine's crowd-hit Roses are still priced around P300 to P400 per bundle, while sunflowers range from P250-P400 per bundle.
Vendors, however, saw fewer patrons despite Undas eve and more flower stocks than consumers were willing to buy.
In a typical scenario, the seasonal price increase results from the increased demand for the flowers brought by celebrations such as Undas and Valentine’s.
But despite the lower flower demand, Caravana’s business is going better than usual.
“Hindi kami masyadong nagtaas ng presyo since ‘di naman din po ganun kamahal ang kuha namin ng bulaklak [from Baguio],” the vendor said.
According to the online flower shop Flowerstore PH, the Undas season holds deep cultural significance in the country, prompting visitors to offer meaningful flowers that embody respect and cherished memories.
Meanwhile, according to an ambush interview with Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna, the nearby Manila North Cemetery is expecting 1.5 million visitors in this year’s Undas commemorations.
The government declared Nov. 1 and 2 as annual non-working holidays in observance of All Saint’s Day and All Souls’ Day, respectively.
