The UST Golden Booters stunned the FEU Tamaraws after scoring two late goals at the death to cop their second straight win in the UAAP Season 87 men's football tournament on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the UP Diliman Football Pitch.
Japjap Baito, the lone scorer for UST in their last win against the AdU Falcons, opened the match with a goal in the 39th minute to put the Golden Booters up, 1-0.
FEU’s Karl Absalon later equalized to tie the game at the 52nd minute, 1-1
UST skipper Tj Garciano tallied a goal in the 66th minute for the Golden Booters’ second goal, 2-1.
Al Galario scored another equalizer for Tamaraws at the 78th minute to tie the match, 2-2.
Archie Belluga converted from the penalty spot at the 94th minute, giving the España-based squad a 3-2 lead late in the game.
FEU’s attempt for another equalizer was thwarted after a quick trap and counterattack from the Golden Booters, resulting in a goal from Kiel Elopre at the 97th minute, which proved to be the game-finisher, 4-2.
“We all felt relieved, but the game wasn't done yet so we didn't lose focus… Sa utak ko non, I just had to be in the right position para just in case may second ball, sa akin mapupunta, which it did so I controlled it and scored,” Elopre told TomasinoWeb, when asked about how he felt after Belluga scored in a penalty attempt.
“It feels great but we're done celebrating for now. It's time to refocus and move forward… we are very happy and blessed, but the job is not yet done,” Elopre added.
Chaos erupted late into the match with FEU’s Mel Baylon getting sent off for headbutting Golden Booter John Selarde in the final minutes of the match.
With this win, UST improved to a 3-0-2 win-draw-loss record with nine points, to tie with the Morayta-based squad for the third seed.
The Golden Booters will face the ADMU Blue Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 20, in the same venue.
