Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan and the Manila City Hall Council head Vice Mayor John Martin “Yul Servo” Nieto will pass a resolution today, Aug. 15, declaring Aug. 4 as a working holiday after Carlos Yulo’s historic Olympic win.
Yulo became the first two-time Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“We are encouraging the council of Manila because on that day [Aug. 4], it was the first time where Carlos Yulo won [two gold medals]. It’ll be easy to file the bill since it’s a resolution,” Mayor Lacuna said in an interview with News5.
“Hinihikayat namin ang konseho ng Maynila dahil ‘yun ang araw [Aug. 4], unang nagwagi [two gold medals] si Carlos Yulo. Madali lang naman ma-file ang bill, resolution lang naman ‘yan,” Mayor Lacuna said during an interview with News5.
The Olympian residing in Tondo district will also receive a 2 million pesos cash incentive on Monday, Aug. 19.
Gymnast Carlos Yulo is set to receive cash incentives of 6 million pesos from the House of Representatives and 10 million pesos from the Philippine Sports Commission, according to Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
Megaworld Corporation, a Philippine real-estate developer, also granted Yulo a fully furnished three-bedroom condominium worth 24 million pesos in McKinley Hill, 3 million pesos, and a leaf portrait of Yulo that was designed by Edimar Paclibar.
The developer gave a total of 35 million pesos worth of prizes. He also received lifetime free food, goods, and services from privately owned companies.
Philippine gymnast Yulo secured his first gold during the men’s floor exercise on Aug. 3 and his second gold in the men’s vault finals last Aug. 4.
Yulo and other athletes were greeted in the Philippines after their games in Paris during the Heroes Parade yesterday, Aug. 14, at the Philippine International Convention Center to Malacañang Palace.
