The University slid off the 2024 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings by Subject after several years of receiving rankings in the Medicine subject area.

QS Communications Manager on Institutional Performance Will Barbieri said that UST was not ranked in the Medicine subject area this year due to “lack of data availability” or failing to “meet the criteria required to rank in any discipline.”

“Rising global competition in Medicine squeezed the University of Santo Tomas out of the rankings,” Barbieri said in an email to TomasinoWeb.

The University was first ranked in the Medicine subject in 2019 at the 451-500 group, before sliding to 551-600 in 2020. It fell further to 601-650 in 2021 and 651-670 in 2022, before recovering back to the 601-650 rank last year.

This is the only subject area where the University received a ranking, out of the 55 subjects QS issues ratings for.

These subjects fall into five broad categories: engineering and technology, natural sciences, arts and humanities, life sciences and medicine, and social sciences and management.

QS assessed 1,559 institutions worldwide for the 2024 report. Ateneo de Manila (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), and the University of the Philippines (UP) were the only Philippine universities ranked in the 2024 QS Subject report.

UP came out as the top university in the country for social sciences and management subjects, coming in at 256th place, beating DLSU and AdMU, which were ranked in the 401-450 bracket.

AdMU was deemed the best in the arts and humanities subject area as it ranked 325th globally, followed by UP at 351st and DLSU at the 401-450th band.

The University of the Philippines was the only Philippine university that received a rank in the engineering and technology and life sciences and medicine subject areas, where they landed in the 501-550 and 401-450 bands, respectively.

No Philippine university ranked in the natural sciences subject.

Harvard University was listed as the top school in life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences and management.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was named the world's best engineering and technology institution.
