The UST Male Woodpushers kept their top spot intact with seven total points after the second week of the UAAP Season 86 Chess Chamionships on on Oct. 22-23 at the FEU Tech Building.
The Male Woodpushers first displayed brilliance versus the DLSU Chess team, 3.5-5.0, in Round 3 on Saturday, highlighted by Melito Ocsan Jr’s 49-move drubbing of Daniel Lemi.
UST’s Chester Reyes and Julius Gonzalez also secured wins against La Salle’s Francis Guimalan and Diomel Escutin in 62 and 54 moves, respectively.
The lone draw came from Mark Daluz, settling on a stalemate versus DLSU’s Cyril Telesforo.
The Thomasian squad, however, was dealt with a 2-2 result against the Adamson University on Sunday as the Male Woodpushers only scored one win courtesy of his 33-move display against AdU’s Alfonso Olendo.
Daluz then lost a 30-move battle against John Sunga to tally UST’s only loss in Round 4.
Playing his first match of the season. UST’s Brian Vinluan finished a draw with Adamson’s Matt Ramos, while Chester Reyes scored a tie in 76 moves against John Simon.
Meanwhile, in women’s play, the Lady Woodpushers recorded their first win of the season, defeating the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 2.5-1.5 in Round 3.
Rohanisah Buto continued her winning streak, nipping Ateneo’s Alphecca Gonzales in 31 moves, while Princess Onita outwitted Kristine Flores in 34 moves for UST’s two wins.
UST’s Josemier Panol salvaged a draw versus the Blue Eagles’ Maria Villa in the longest match of the round with 85 moves.
Jannah Olay capped off the round for UST with a loss against Jiessel Marino before the Lady Woodpushers took a bye in Round 4.
On the other hand, the UST Male Woodpushers will face the FEU Tamaraws next in the Stage 1 capper on Sunday, Oct. 29, at the same venue.
