UST Golden Booters (2-0-2) toppled league leaders UE Red Warriors (2-1-0), 2-0, to book a quarterfinal ticket in Ang Liga Season 19, on Saturday, September 16, at the UP Diliman Football Pitch.
In a heated match, the Booters maintained their form and breezed UE despite a series of altercations with the Recto-based squad, ending with two of the Golden Booters sustaining injuries afterward.
The action was high before halftime as Booters’ starter Kyler Ken Escobar was taken off the field after a scuffle with one of the Warriors along with John Mark Garcia who got subbed out after getting tackled on play.
Later in the game, a series of fouls plagued UST with Sam Alegre, Jarred Regis, and head coach Marjo Allado receiving yellow cards altogether by the 50th-minute. Carlos Orale also received a red card on top of a yellow card due to another altercation, forcing him out of the game.
Setting the tone early, the Warriors started strong, covering the field with their fast-paced offense to pressure the Booters’ right field, but UST never gave in to UE’s resistance.
UST's Chris Valderama scored the game’s first goal with a head punt off a sideline pass in the 31st-minute of the match to swing the match to the Golden Booters
UST continued to ride its momentum in the second half as a fumbled sequence from UE led to Andrew Ramos' goal in the 61st minute to seal the win for the Golden Booters.
Despite the multiple rush attempts by the Warriors, UST’s backline remained solid defensively with their persistent marking and well-timed intercepts, which left no comfort for the UE offense.
UST maintained its clean slate in the tournament, while the Warriors sustained their first loss.
The Golden Booters will conclude their group phase games on Sunday, September 24, against the Mapuan Malayan Colleges Laguna in the same venue.
