Asian pole vaulter EJ Obiena reaches new heights and ascends onto the No. 2 spot.

In the latest standings released by the World Athletics, the Thomasian alumnus tallied 1,432 surpassing reigning Olympic silver medalist Chris Nilsen at 1,328 to bump off the American from his number two spot.

Swedish pole vaulter and World’s No.1 Armand Duplantis still reigns supreme with a tally of 1,569 in his record.

“Your very own skinny kid from Tondo, alumni of CKSC and UST, is now WORLD NUMBER TWO,” Obiena declared on his social media page.

Prior to becoming World’s No. 2, the 27-year-old Filipino pole vault star has been having a career of a lifetime since the year started, continuing his medal streak as well as setting new records in previous tournaments.

Just recently, the Filipino pole vaulter dominated the Asian Athletics Championship setting a new record of 5.91 meters, clearing his previous record of 5.71 in 2019.

Obiena also joined the “six-meter club” after making a six-meter clearance in Norway’s Bergen Jump Challenge last June, making him the first Asian to clear the height.

With the success Obiena has had, the pole vaulter proves to be a formidable contender in the world pole vault scene and should be one of the athletes to look out for in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

Obiena fell out of the top 10 in the last 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Duplantis won gold, Nilsen snagged silver, and the now world-ranked no. 5 pole vaulter Thiago Braz of Brazil gained bronze.
