Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula Jr., O.P., called the faithful to take after the Marian teachings in nurturing their friendship with God on the opening Mass during the first day of the 12th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE) at the Quadricentennial Pavilion on Friday, July 24.

Advincula cited the values of hinay-hinay, kanunay and buligay, which are Waray terms meaning gentleness, steadfastness, and mutual help.

He said these Marian teachings should guide the faithful in their mission to foster friendship and love.

“Our mission is not only a task, but also a blessing from God. We see Him as a friend inviting us to share in His mission for love, rather than a boss we have to please,” he said.

Advincula further stressed that true love should be patient with God’s plan and timing. It must also be capable of extending and receiving help.

This year’s conference carried the theme of “Sangkáy: I have called you friends,” with a focus on friendship and relational conversion.

The Mass was followed by a keynote address delivered by Diocese of Naval Bishop Rex Ramirez, D.D., and a panel discussion by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on relational conversion. The first day of the conference concluded with a communal prayer for healing led by Philippine Dominican Prior Provincial Filemon dela Cruz Jr., O.P.

This year’s PCNE took place from July 24 to 26, with reflections and activities running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
