The foundation of Pope Francis’s papacy was rooted in truth and transparency, Rev. Fr. Isidro Abaño, O.P., said during the Mass for Pope Francis on Wednesday, April 23, at the Santísimo Rosario Parish.
In his homily, the Civil Law regent recounted the ideals that reshaped the system of the “organization” under the late Pope’s leadership.
“For Pope Francis, trust is only possible if the church is transparent [and takes accountability] for the shortcomings and scandals committed by the members,” Abaño said.
“This became the foundation of some reforms and changes of the organization [that] he implemented during his [time as pope],” he added.
Fr. Abaño also reminded the faithful to take inspiration from Pope Francis's life, defined by simplicity and humility.
“He lived a very simple life, nothing of excessiveness,” Abaño said, encouraging both the faithful and the clergy to “live simply and celebrate the liturgy with great dignity, yet with simplicity.”
In addition to reflecting on Pope Francis’s humble yet meaningful life, the Mass celebrant also emphasized the late pontiff’s vision of the church’s mission.
“He envisions the church that is not just [merely] implementing the dos and don’ts, but the church that is ready to embrace the suffering [of the people]”
At the end of his homily, Abaño called the people to pray that Pope Francis may find the joy and hope “he longed for,” as his “legacy of mercy and compassion” lives on.
The next scheduled mass for the Eternal Repose of the Soul of Pope Francis will be on April 25 at the Santísimo Rosario Parish Church.
