The Education program of the University of Santo Tomas was recognized for the first time in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) 2025 World University Rankings by Subject releasedon Wednesday, Jan. 22.
UST’s Education degree programs ranked in the 501-600 bracket with a score of 21.6 in teaching, 12 in research environment, 52.6 in research quality, 32.8 in industry, and 57.3 in international outlook.
The University’s Medicine degree programs moved up to the 601-800 bracket with ratings of 13.8 in teaching, 8.2 in research environment, 44.4 in research quality, 22.4 in industry, and 68.2 in international outlook. UST’s medicine programs landed in the 801-1000 bracket in the 2024 edition.
The University of the Philippines’s (UP) medicine program was ranked above UST, placing in the 501-600 bracket.
Aside from UST, the education programs of De La Salle University and UP were also recognized, with the former ranked at the 401-500 bracket and the latter landing at the 501-600 bracket.
The University placed in the 1501+ band category in the overall list of the top universities for this year’s world university rankings.
Other subjects that THE ranked are the arts and humanities, business and economics, computer science, engineering, law, life sciences, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.
THE evaluators assessed universities and colleges in the following categories and with the following weights: teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), industry (7.5%), and international outlook (4%).
An institution is included in the rankings if they publish a minimum of 1,000 academic papers and articles in the past five years or 100 papers per year, depending on each discipline.
Meanwhile, a threshold of 1% or 20 faculty members in the education studies 5% or 50 medical and health educators must be ranked.
Factors such as teaching reputation, research, and income are also determinants in ranking each university or college.
Academic institutions who submitted insufficient data are placed under the Reporter status.
Stanford University is the top institution in the education studies category with a 95.9 score.
Oxford University led the list of top-ranking schools in the medical and health category, with an overall score of 96.
