The Flame, the official student publication of the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB), bagged the best editorial, best feature, and best in-depth report in the 10th UST National Campus Journalism Awards (UNCJA), a yearly student journalism competition hosted by The Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas.
In the awarding ceremony on Jan. 12, the AB publication received recognition for their feature article written by Ma. Alyanna Selda titled “Through sticks and strings: Pinoy puppeteers struggle to survive post-lockdown,” which featured the struggles of an Intramuros-based puppeteer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The article, ”From Streets to Sheets: Motorcycle Drivers Turn to Sex Work Amid Hard Times,” written by current The Flame editor-in-chief Zoe Aguinaldo alongside writers Jianzen Deananeas, Joss Oliveros, and Ma. Alyanna Selda, won best in-depth report, while Fatima Baduria and Bless Ogerio’s “Token Directive, Token Statement” won best editorial.
In a tie with The Flame is the Far Eastern University - Manila publication The Advocate,, who bagged the best feature for their article, “From the middle to the orient: Olive trees resprout in ‘Little Gaza,” written by Eunhice Corpuz and Mark Vincent Durano.
Student publications from other colleges and universities also received citations from the jury. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ (PUP) official publication, The Communicator, received a special jury citation for its editorial titled, “Hustisyang nakaangkla sa naghaharing-uri,” written by Roselle Ochobillo.
The feature, “5 Shots, One Mother, and a Newfound Crusade: The Odyssey of Nanette Castillo,” written by Karl Patrick Suyat of the KRISIS - UP Journalism Club publication, received a special jury citation.
Ateneo de Manila University's official student publication, The GUIDON, also clinched a special jury citation in the features category with “Tilling the land: Women farmers of Tayabas,” by Zaki Dayrit and Josiah Tomas.
Finally, The Benildean, De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde’s student publication, earned a special jury citation for their in-depth report, “Bridging the gap: Integration of PWD employees in the workplace,” by writer Victoria Mareposque.
Winners received a trophy and a cash prize of P20,000 each. The Flame received a total cash prize of P60,000 with their three awards. Meanwhile, P10,000 each were awarded to the special honorees.
This year’s panel of judges included Philstar Global editor-in-chief Camille Diola, UP Department of Journalism instructor Janvic Mateo, Asian Center of Journalism director Luz Rimban, and award-winning reporters Manny Mogato, and Joel Pablo Salud.
The awards ceremony was held during the 26th Inkblots campus journalism workshop hosted annually by The Varsitarian, held at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.
