The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Shuttlers took split wins after defeating the University of the East Lady Warriors, but succumbing to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the UAAP Season 81 badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall Saturday.
The Female Shuttlers crushed the Lady Warriors, 5-0, while the Male Shuttlers bowed down to the Fighting Maroons, 2-3.
“Sa men’s, sayang eh. Sayang, may nakita sana kaming butas, bumitaw lang yung player. Pero yung laro nila, medyo nag i-improve naman, lumalabas na yung pagiging tigre nila, yung pangil nila, pero kulang pa. At least hindi kami basta basta nagpatalo,” UST assistant coach Chona Medina told TomasinoWeb.
“Sa women’s naman, maganda yung game, na 5-0 namin. At least hindi na kami huli, so one step at a time,” she added.
UST managed to notch a win after John Paul Yabut defeated Kyle Legaspi in the second singles event, 21-10, 16-21, 21-17.
John Henrick Peralta also overpowered UP’s Michael Clemente at the last singles event, 21-16, 21-23, 22-20, but UP grabbed the first singles and both doubles events, leaving UST with a 2-3 win.
The Female Shuttlers swept all matches, after Laville Laborte of UE sustained an injury from a bad fall and forfeited the second doubles and third singles events where she played.
The Female Shuttlers will next face the De La Salle University on Sunday, Sept. 30, while the Male Shuttlers will face the University of the East on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the same venue.
“So next game sa La Salle, pipilitin naming maka 3-2,” Medina quipped.
