UST was on its way to a perfect finish as it lead 2-0 in sets, but La Salle made them work for the victory. After a lopsided third set which La Salle bagged, the Green Spikers forced a deciding set after a grueling fourth set which saw the teams exchange points in the end. “Nag adjust sila at nahirapan kami sa mga errors namin kaya nakabalik din agad La Salle,” Joshua Umandal said. It was an intense fifth set as UST scored four unanswered points to a 7-3 lead midway through the set. La Salle then scrapped for every point until they tied the score, 14-all. UST then scored two straight points with the match point being an attack error of La Salle, 16-14. Five players scored in double digits lead by rookie Umandal with 21 points. Captain Timothy Tajanlangit finished with 34 excellent sets. UST’s next game will be against the University of the East on Wednesday, Feb 11, at the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan. Down 15-21 in the fourth set, Adamson sparked a 7-2 surge to cut UST’s lead within one, 22-23. However, Joshua Umandal’s cross court kill and Tim Tajanlangit’s drop ball saved the day for UST, 25-22. “Maayos ang blocking namin pero yung execution nung attack play namin naiba yung focus, so we have to work on that pa,” UST head coach Arthur “Odjie” Mamon said. “Actually, frustrated na (si Umandal) which I understand kasi nag-sarili na si Timmy (Tajanlangit), setter namin, na going against the game plan namin.” In the third set, Adamson took advantage of Umandal’s absense, easily snatching the set, 25-14. Umandal went down early in the set after colliding with Adamson’s JP Yude. Arnold Bautista led the Tigers with game-high 16 points while Umandal added 12 markers. Leo Miranda paced Adamson with 12 points. UST will take on the runner-up National University Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the same venue.
