Golden Spikers blast UE

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers stood tall against the UE Red Warriors in four sets, 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, in the UAAP Season 80 men’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan Wednesday.

Trailing by 0-2 in the fourth canto, UST unleashed an 11-3 run led by the one-two punch of JJ Buro and Joshua Umandal, 11-5.

UE’s Noel Alba tried to cut the deficit into four by scoring three straight points, 14-10.

However, UST proved to be too much for UE, cruising their way to victory with another 11-5 surge, 25-15.

Despite claiming the win, UST head coach Arthur “Odjie” Mamon was not pleased on how his players performed during the third set.

“As usual, complacent sila sa third set. Nawawala yung pagiging aggressive nila,” he stated.

The España-based squad failed to close out the third salvo, as UE forced them to commit 11 errors in that set alone, 20-25.

Arnold Bautista led the charge for UST with 13 points, while Umandal and Buro contributed 12 markers apiece.

Skipper TJ Tajanlangit tallied 43 excellent sets. UST will square off against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday at the same venue.

The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs took home the bronze medal after running out of fuel against the Nazareth School of National University Bullpups, 72-91, in the stepladder semifinals round of UAAP Season 80 junior’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena Tuesday.

Jules Anunciacion and Rayjhun Baquial buried back-to-back baskets in the final period for UST to cut the lead by 11, 58-69, but NU sparked a 19-8 run giving them their biggest lead by 22 points, 88-66.

UST were able to score six points in the crucial period, but NU scored three more points to finally close out the game, 72-91.

“Sobrang pagod na rin ng mga bata, kasi halos wala na rin kaming pahinga after noong FEU game namin noong eliminations,” Tiger Cubs head coach Chris Cantonjos explained. “Kung nabigyan lang din sana kami ng at least one-day off, I think na-sustain namin (yung NU).”

Despite the team’s failure to force the series into a do-or-die duel, Cantonjos praised his players for exceeding his expectation for the team.

“Thankful ako sa mga players kasi sabi ko noong una walang naniniwala na makakaakyat kami dito (sa Final 4),” he said.

Baquial and Villapando led UST with 16 points apiece while John Cansino finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds. NU’s Terrence Fortea and Miguel Ocsea tallied 17 and 16 points, respectively.

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses crushed the Adamson Lady Falcons in three sets, 25-9, 31-29, 25-19 in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan Sunday.

UST made quick work with a three-setter win versus Adamson, starting strong with a 25-9 first set win over the Lady Falcons.

Adamson adjusted in the second set leading by three points, 24-21, but UST responded with three straight points to tie the set at 24 apiece.

The teams went back and forth combining for six set points with the last deadlock at 29-all before UST clawed two straight points to claim the set, 31-29.

UST proved to be too much for the Lady Falcons and sealed the game after winning the final set, 25-19.

“Eto talaga yung mukha ni UST. Ang ganda ng response ng mga players,” UST head coach Kung Fu Reyes Jr. stated.

Sisi Rondina lead the way for the Tigresses with 22 points while Dimdim Pacres added 13 points.

“Team effort pa din and wag nating payagan na ganun ‘yung pinagsasabi ng iba sa UST,” Tigresses ace player Sisi Rondina said.

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers escaped the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 25-20, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 80 men’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City Sunday.

Down 15-21 in the fourth set, Adamson sparked a 7-2 surge to cut UST’s lead within one, 22-23. However, Joshua Umandal’s cross court kill and Tim Tajanlangit’s drop ball saved the day for UST, 25-22.

“Maayos ang blocking namin pero yung execution nung attack play namin naiba yung focus, so we have to work on that pa,” UST head coach Arthur “Odjie” Mamon said. “Actually, frustrated na (si Umandal) which I understand kasi nag-sarili na si Timmy (Tajanlangit), setter namin, na going against the game plan namin.”

In the third set, Adamson took advantage of Umandal’s absense, easily snatching the set, 25-14. Umandal went down early in the set after colliding with Adamson’s JP Yude.

Arnold Bautista led the Tigers with game-high 16 points while Umandal added 12 markers. Leo Miranda paced Adamson with 12 points.

UST will take on the runner-up National University Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the same venue.
