The UST Growling Tigresses opened their inaugural season of the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) with an 82-67 victory against the Discovery Perlas on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Karylle Sierba was hailed player of the game, tallying 14 points, followed by their new foreign recruit, Isioma Onianwa, who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Sobrang saya po na isa ako sa naglalaro ngayon dito sa WNBPL. Sobrang happy lang kasi nakakasabay ako sa mga veterano. And kumpyansa lang po lagi sa sarili,” Sierba said.

Eka Soriano and outgoing Tigress Tacky Tacatac also balled out for UST, combining for 18 points, eight rebounds, and six steals in the winning effort.

The Discovery Perlas started the opening quarter with a 5-1 run sparked by former UST hotshots Tantoy Ferrer and Alianna Lim.

The Growling Tigresses established an eight-point advantage through the offensive firepower of Kent Pastrana, Brigette Santos, Soriano, and Sierba, 19-11.

The Discovery squad trimmed down the lead to four before the opening quarter ended after a three-pointer by AJ Gloriani, 21-17.

Discovery closed the gap against UST after Raiza Palmera-Dy, FEU’s head coach during the UAAP S87 women’s basketball tournament, knocked in two shots from the charity line, followed by a long range bomb from Angel Anies, 23-22.

The España-based squad unleashed a 14-2 rally to end the first half with a 15-point lead courtesy of Rachelle Ambos, Nicole Danganan, Onianwa, and Sierba, 42-27.

Ferrer ignited a 4-0 run in the opening minutes of the third quarter to simmer down the lead to 11, 42-31.

The third period saw UST find their bearings and play like a well-oiled machine as Tacatac knocked in back-to-back threes to extend their lead to 17, 50-33.

Agatha Bron, Ayesha Pescador, and Onianwa turned in three straight baskets to pad their lead to 22, 57-35. But Gloriani and Anies responded with back-to-back shots from the rainbow country to bring down the lead to 17 before entering the final canto, 60-43.

UST established their biggest lead of the game in the fourth quarter after Breana Pineda, Sierba, and Santos registered four consecutive triples, 80-53.

The Growling Tigresses seized their first win of the season despite the 14-2 blitz unleashed by Perlas through the offensive firepower of Camille Sambile, Ferrer, and Lim, 82-67.

Haydee Ong will be taking a break as the head coach of UST as she is the Commissioner of the inaugural season of WMPBL. Gerard Austria will be the head coach of UST all throughout the tournament.

Siyempre, siguro, considered na rin na first game ever, may first game jitters po siguro sa players ko, pati sa akin. Admittedly, pati sa akin kasi first time ko rin ever as a head coach,” UST head coach Gerard Austria said.

So may first game jitters pero yun, I always live by my motto na sabi na, may konting pressure or jitters pero ang always mong titignan, babalikan mo kung ano yung habits at preparation mo,” Austria added.

Lim paced the Perlas squad in their loss, tallying 17 points and nine rebounds, while Sambile turned in 13 points and five rebounds in the losing effort.

The league has yet to announce the upcoming roadmap for the Tigresses for the season.
