UST Tiger Cubs outclassed by NUNS in Season 87 opener

The UST Tiger Cubs opened their UAAP Season 87 high school boys’ basketball tournament with a 60-71 loss against the NUNS Bullpups on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Charles Bucsit led the charge for the Tiger Cubs with 15 markers, four steals, and five rebounds, while Charles Esteban registered 13 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort.

UST and Batang Gilas Pilipinas standout Wacky Ludovice had a rough game, only finishing with nine points on 1-of-12 shooting.

The Bullpups started the opening quarter strong, unleashing a 19-4 rally courtesy of Collins Akowe, Carl Alfanta, Ivler Napa, and Jid Locsin.

The España-based squad failed to charge back as they finished the first period behind by 15, 8-23.

The Bustillos-based team pushed the lead up to 21 points in the opening minutes of the second salvo through three straight buckets from Johnkurl Figueroa, Alfanta, and Locsin, 29-8.

UST pounced back with a 6-0 rally courtesy of back-to-back baskets by Ronjay Catalan, 14-29.

The Bullpups turned in four consecutive conversions through the offensive firepower of Akowe to pump the lead back to 21 points, 48-27.

The Tiger Cubs found their groove as Bucsit and Ludovice sparked a 14-4 run, trimming down the lead to 11 points, 41-52.

UST outscored the Bullpups in the third quarter by nine points, 21-12, to enter the final quarter trailing only by 12, 48-60.

Both teams were firing blanks to start the fourth canto but the España-based squad was able to cut the lead to 10 through Ludovice and Bucsit, 55-65.

Despite their late surge, the Tiger Cubs failed to secure a comeback as NU held onto their lead until the final seconds, 71-60.

Season 86 MVP, Akowe, led the NUNS with a double-double performance, tallying 21 points and 26 rebounds, while Carl Alfanta turned in 15 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting in the winning effort.

UST will now look to seize their first win of the season as they will be clashing against the UPIS Fighting Maroons on Thursday, Jan. 23, in the same venue.
