For the first time in five years, the Tigresses will play for the UAAP volleyball crown.

The UST Golden Tigresses outlasted the DLSU Lady Spikers, 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-7 on Sunday, May 5, at the Mall of Asia Arena, to punch their ticket to the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball finals.

Star rookie Angeline Poyos led the España- based squad, contributing 28 points on 25 attacks, two service aces, and one block, while Jonna Perdido produced 18 markers on 16 attacks and two blocks, to help UST become the first finalist this season.

This will be the Tigresses' first championship appearance since Season 81, when they lost against the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Ousting last year's champions, the second-seeded Tigresses were 3-0 against the Lady Spikers this season, including the final elimination game that gave UST the twice-to-beat edge.

“Syempre masaya kasi ito ulit kami, nandito na naman at pumasok ulit sa Finals,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Kungfu Reyes. “Gaya ng sinabi ko last game sa kanila, hindi mo pwedeng ipagkibit-balikat ang La Salle."

UST got off to a hot start, opening a 12-7 lead early before timely hits from Poyos and Perdido lifted the Tigresses in the first set, 25-20.

La Salle turned around from a 7-9 deficit through a 13-2 run in the closing moments of the second frame to take the set, 25-16.

Regina Jurado then picked up the cudgels for UST in the third set, sparking a 7-1 run to put themselves back in the driver’s seat, 25-20.

In the fourth set, the Lady Spikers got precious contributions from Thea Gagate to seize control of the period and force the deciding fifth canto, 25-19.

The Tigresses went out swinging into the final set, capitalizing on a net touch violation from La Salle to embark on a 7-2 run early in the set to lead, 7-3.

Perdido stepped up for a kill to bring the Tigresses ever closer to another shot at glory, while a service ace from UST setter Cassie Carballo secured UST’s finals appearance, 15-7.

The Golden Tigresses will await the result of the FEU-NU do-or-die clash on Wednesday, May 8, at the Araneta Coliseum to know who they will face in the finals.
