The UST Golden Spikers kicked off their UAAP Season 86 campaign with a straight sets win over the NU Bulldogs, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 on Sunday, Feb. 18 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The win snapped the Bulldogs’ 34-game winning streak and handed them their first loss since 2019. Reigning MVP Josh Ybañez dropped 13 points, while Paul Colinares and Jay Rack De La Noche dropped nine points each.

Rainier Flor added eight points, while GBoy De Vega contributed six, markers as the Golden Spikers started the season on a high note.

A quick start from UST saw them lead early in the first set, 10-5, before NU picked up tempo after their first timeout, keeping the game close until the 23-all mark.

Two solid kills from Flor and Ybañez allowed the Golden Spikers to break away from the Bulldogs and take the first set.

Sherwin Umandal sparked a breakaway in the waning moments of the second set, pulling the Golden Spikers on the verge of their first win after an extended second frame.

The Bulldogs took the lead early in the third set but a combined effort from UST saw them chip away NU's lead to win the match through an ace from Gboy De Vega.

Angelo Almendras led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points, while rookie Jade Disquitado followed with 13 points. NU also led the match in blocks with eight, outdoing UST’s four.

The Golden Spikers are set to face the UE Red Warriors on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Araneta Coliseum.—With reports from Johann Coronel
