UST Tiger Spikers eke out Adamson
Another five-setter victory for the Tiger Spikers
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers needed five sets to dispatch the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 30-28, 25-23, 25-23, 25-10, 15-12, in the UAAP Season 79 men’s volleyball tournament, Saturday, at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Wewe Medina led the Tiger Spikers with 17 points, while JJ Buro and Arnold Bautista chipped in 14 points each en route to their third win in five outings.
In the fifth and final set, Buro stepped up off the bench on his clutch plays and skipper Arnold Bautista would seal the match with back-to-back down the line kills, 15-12.
UST head coach Odjie Mamon pointed out the crucial plays that got them the victory. “We had 10 more errors (42:32) than Adamson, pero despite of that nanalo.” Mamon also praised JJ Buro and JM Millado as they had stellar performance off the bench especially in crunch time. “Napasama sila sa team dahil sa competitiveness nila,” he said.
The Espana-based spikers survived four set points to cap off the nip-and-tuck first set, 30-28.
UST snatched the third set as Bautista and Buro provided one-two punch for combined eight points, 25-23.
AdU waxed hot in the fourth set highlighted by their 7-0 start and never looked back.
Soaring Falcons’ Jerome Sarmiento tallied a game-high 19 points as his squad failed to capitalize UST’s 42 unforced errors.
