Tigresses dropped to their third loss in spite of Laure's 18 points showing.
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses fumbled down the stretch against the streaking University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 22-25, 22-25, 31-29, 19-25, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City Sunday.
Down 18-21 in the fourth and deciding set, the España-based spikers committed crucial errors capped by Cherry Rondina’s mishit on her attack before UP’s Diana Carlos sealed the deal with a service ace, 19-25.
Both squads had a neck-and-neck battle in a highly-contested third frame, 24-24. UST was able to thrashed Lady Maroon’s three match points via EJ Laure’s crosscourt kill and a marginal attacking error on UP, 31-29.
“A game lang talaga ng UP. Ang ganda nung nilalaro nila,” UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes said. “Uunti-untihin lang ulit namin. Hindi kami maghihintay ng mahinang kalaban para manalo.”
Tied at 22 in the first frame, UP capitalized on UST’s three straight unforced errors, 25-22.
Lady Maroons repeated the deed in the second canto as they broke a 22-all deadlock with three straight points off Carlos’ down-the-line attack, 25-22.
Carlos led the Lady Maroons to their fourth victory with 18 points while Jessma Ramos and Nicole Tiamzon had 14 and 13, respectively.
Tigresses dropped to their third loss in four outings in spite of Laure’s 18 points showing.
UST will next face the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the same venue.
