Tiger Spikers finish fourth in UAAP
The Far Eastern University Tamaraws ended the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers’ Cinderella run in the UAAP Season 79 Men’s Volleyball step ladder semi final, 25-22, 27-25, 25-18, Tuesday, at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena.
Team captain Arnold Bautista Jr. was the sole double digit scorer for UST with 12 points. Timothy Tajanlangit added another nine points while Jayvee Sumagaysay scored six.
“Mid-game to end-game nawawala kami,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said.
“Nawawala sa focus kasi nasobrahan sa celebration dahil naka-score, or na-rattle na dahil naka-score nang naka-score ang kalaban.”
Down two sets to none, the Tiger Spikers were cruising with a 16-10 lead late in the third set, before the Tamaraws struck back with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, 19-17.
Manuel Medina tried to end UST’s drought with an off-the-block kill to put them back within one, 18-19 but FEU would pummel the Tigers with another 6-0 blitz to take the set and move forward in the semis, 25-18.
Despite placing fourth, Mamon’s overall assessment of the team for the season was “good.”
“Honest assessment kasi nakita ko yung ibang teams prior to UAAP, prinomise ko lang number one we will come ahead of La Salle, and then of course we will improve our ranking last season.”
The Tiger Spikers finished seventh in season 78, behind La Salle who finished sixth which led to UST losing the general championship.
Still, Mamon was unsatisfied with his team’s performance saying his squad had more to offer. “Wala namang masaya matalo diba, lalo na kami kasi alam namin yung potential nila,” he said.
