Tiger Spikers falter against Ateneo
“Nakakapanghinayang lang because it was an opportunity, pero okay lang dahil natututo pa naman sila (Tiger Spikers).”
The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers failed to sustain their momentum as they fell against the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles 25-22, 23-25, 13-25, 21-25, in the UAAP Season 79 men’s volleyball tournament, Saturday, at the Fil oil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Manuel Medina led the Tigers with 13 points all from attacks while Jerico Jose added another 11 points as the Tigers absorbed their sixth loss of the season.
The Espana-based spikers had a dominating first set after overturning a three point deficit to a two point lead in the first technical timeout, 8-6. The Tiger’s momentum would push them to take the opening set, 25-22.
The Blue Eagles would comeback in the second set with a six point over the Tigers, 16-10, but a 6-1 blitz by the Tigers cut the lead down to two, 18-16. However, Ateneo’s offense proved too much to UST as they yielded the set 23-25.
Ateneo carried the momentum to the third set as they pounded Tiger Spikers with a ten-point lead 21-11, and never looked back to pocket the set 25-13.
UST tried to make a comeback late in the fourth with a three-point run to cut Ateneo’s lead to one, 15-16. However, Ateneo would make a 4-1 blitz of their own to end the match 25-21.
“Galing to sa exam week, so ang preparation namin against Ateneo is not as meticulous hindi kagaya nung last game,” Tiger Spikers head coach Odjie Mamon said.
“Nakakapanghinayang lang because it was an opportunity, pero okay lang dahil natututo pa naman sila (Tiger Spikers),” Mamon added.
Now with a record of 4-6, UST must win all their remaining games in order to vie a spot in the Final four.
The Tigers Spikers next face currently fourth-seeded University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Saturday, Mar. 25 at the same venue.
